The fourtieth Pacific Island forum, 6th September, 2011, in Auckland, New Zealand.

Top on the agenda is climate change, regional economic development, trade negotiations, and at the back of the minds of many regionalists is the concern over Fiji’s presumed regional recalcitrant, and the impact of a traditional hegemonic leadership by Fiji of Pacific Island matters. As for Australia, the regional focus is on the way in which the present incumbent government deals with illegal migration, the legal and ethical dilemma of the asylum seekers offshore processing.

Adjunct to this topical concern, in the meantime, is the age long regional issue of concern of the perpetual human resource movements from Pacific Islands to Australia and New Zealand and the endemic impact of institutionalised racism, joblessness and the rendering to second class citizenry of many Pacific Islanders within New Zealand and in particular within Australian society.
